I think Eve Online does this best.
You can buy 30 or 90 day game time cards in real life for cash. Each of these cards has a code that you can redeem to extend your account subscription by 30 or 90 days.
Eve online offers an official, secure and sanctioned system where you can 'sell' these codes to other players for in-game money/gold.
That means players in the game who make a lot of gold, can just use it to buy these codes and extend their subscription.
Players who would rather not spend all the time in-game to grind gold can just buy these cards and sell them for gold.
It's a win for both these player types. It's also a win for Eve Online since you have two happy players and an extended subscription.
I'd love to see other MMO's take this approach!

And it looks like CCP is targetting a handful of subs, and a couple of Corporations 'to make the example'.
When, of course, all the major power blocs and players were using the exploit, including, no doubt, CCP employees.
Sadly, the game will go on because there's nothing else like EvE Online out there. Or, perhaps, because there's nothing like EvE Online out there.

Minecraft SMP on an Eve Online-esqe server, with everyone on the same massive world. Everyone spawned a set distance away from eac oter, so you could play the game out like single player and never even encounter other players if you didn’t want to, or you could look up the coordinates to cities and fortresses online and make a long trek to civilization. I’d like to see mods and custom texture packs disabled so there would be no cheating, and I’d also like to see no anti-griefing rules. Basically, an MMO, Minecraft style. Make huge alliances, siege enemy cites, participate in an economy, ect. I’d also like to see the world height at least double, and see new biomes (deeper oceans! Underground lakes! Underwater caverns! Mountainous biomes!) and many more minerals and blocks, perhaps biome specific.
